The Maynards and their children live a near-perfect billionaire family life. Armand is an avid hunter, but does not shoot animals, as the family’s wealth allows them to live completely free from consequences. Ayn Rand: The point is, who’s to stop me?.
Watched this at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival
Filmmakers Daniel Hoesl and Juliane Niemann clearly have an interesting satirical take on the wealthy class and while there are some good ideas, the film feels underdeveloped and not as strong as it might seem. Throughout, the production design, cinematography, and color presentation are beautiful, helping to capture the atmosphere and essence of the characters. While the direction from Hoesl and Niemann is a bit chaotic, there is a clear vision of what style and atmosphere they are aiming for.
There’s no investment or interest in connecting emotionally
Most of the performances are solid, with a few of the children’s shows falling a little flat. The narrative is a good concept but unfortunately, it doesn’t feel as strong as it should because some of the themes feel underdeveloped and the characters are underdeveloped. It’s like it had some good ideas that just didn’t live up to the potential it needed.
But it could have been stronger
There are shocking, exciting and very strange moments and I understand where the filmmakers are coming from and their vision. But it doesn’t feel fully earned and the style feels akin to something by Ruben Ostlund or Michael Haneke. Overall, it’s not bad as there are some moments that I appreciate.
