I was captivated by the romance and definitely got into this series
Line of Events
An agnostic sex podcaster and a newly single rabbi fall in love; discover if their relationship can survive their wildly different lives and meddling families. Its original title was “Shiksa”, which is also the last word of the first episode. There was a lot of great writing, pacing and acting; it was easy to fall in love.
I agree – the rabbi is gay
: )However, I felt a nagging discomfort with the portrayal of Jewish culture. Were some of the inaccuracies just annoyingly jarring, like the Hanukkah menorahs popping up all over the place—at your parents’ front gate? Or the vast wealth that his first-generation immigrant parents somehow amassed.
which is really not a nice thing
But some were more repulsive, such as the constant use of the term ‘shiksa’. If I were around people who would seriously use that term to describe someone, I wouldn’t want to hang out with them anymore. To add insult to injury, the first time the word is used, it is scornfully projected onto a stranger based solely on their appearance.
In the series, non-Jews are repeatedly identified by their blondness
As a blonde Jewish woman, I know this kind of 'but you don’t look Jewish" ignorance, but it does not come from within the Jewish community. at worst, they felt they were wronged and relied on outdated racial stereotypes. I would love to see this improve in the second season!
